Standlake's origins probably predate the Roman occupation, and archaeological evidence has been found of occupation in both Roman and Anglo-Saxon times, while the church of St Giles dates from the late 12th century.

The village has a Church of England Primary School with over 100 pupils, a Post Office and Stores, a pub and restaurant, and a full-service garage, plus numerous small and medium businesses located within the village and at two light industrial parks. The Parish Council supports a recreation ground at Rack End and two children's playgrounds, at Rack End and Windrush Way.

Standlake is surrounded by artificial lakes dug for commercial gravel extraction. Many are now stocked with fish and popular with anglers; others are used for aquatic sports such as windsurfing. Standlake Arena is a locally owned and run quarter-mile oval racing circuit that hosts stock car and banger racing throughout the year, and Oxford Downs Cricket Club has its ground at Standlake.

The Standlake Players, an amateur theatrical society established in October 2007 by a group of villagers, holds three productions a year in the village hall on a newly renovated and modified stage.

Many societies, clubs and organisations are based in the village but also include residents from adjacent communities; they usually carry the inclusive title of 'Lower Windrush'.
